NEW MEXICO CHAPTER

AMERICAN PARKINSON DISEASE ASSOCIATION (APDA)

The New Mexico Chapter is dedicated to raising public awareness of Parkinson’s and to supporting the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) vital research programs.   We maintain an email list of upcoming meetings and news on Parkinson's - please send an email to nmapda@gmail.com to subscribe.  APDA publishes several manuals that address topics like disease symptoms, medications, physiotherapy and speech and swallowing problems.   Single copies are available free of charge upon request.

APDA has organized support groups in several New Mexico communities to help people cope with the disease.   Support groups provide emotional comfort and help participants set new lifestyle priorities.   The groups help motivate patients to maximize their strengths and minimize their impediments.   They are also a valuable source of information.

APDA funds Information and Referral Centers (I & R) throughout the country.   Their functions are to educate, counsel and refer patients to medical professionals and to establish support groups in their geographic areas.   The New Mexico I & R Center sponsors an annual symposium featuring neurologists, research scientist, physical, speech and occupational therapists, and other expert professionals. Sandy Skaar at UNM is the coordinator and can be reached at 505 272-0472 or (toll free) 877 515-4560.  Dr. Sarah Pirio Richardson, a movement disorder neurologist at UNM,  is the new I&R Center medical director

APDA is a private non-profit association that relies on fund raising to support its programs.   Your financial support is critical to helping us fight this disease.
